Who We Are
What We Do
We provide supportive housing for up to ten women over the age of 16 who are either pregnant or parenting a child under 24 months old, with a stay limit of 364 days.
We also assist women who have lost care of their children (up to 24 months old) and are working towards attempting to regain care during their stay with us. Around the clock, our professional staff team provides personalized support, specifically designed for those without strong or healthy community networks.
Our goal is to help young women develop the parenting and life skills they need to not just live independently but thrive.
Our Approach
Our approach involves mothers and their children living in a supportive community. This encourages them to envision and work towards a better future for themselves and their children. We strive for equity and inclusiveness, aiming to give women the strength and resources needed to overcome obstacles.
As our clients prepare to move on from Marillac Place, our AfterCare Program is there to assist them in transitioning to independent living.
Our Commitment
We are committed to supporting pregnant and parenting women experiencing homelessness who deal with various barriers including discrimination, financial difficulties, social stigma, mental health challenges, and limited access to healthcare. Recognizing the complex obstacles they encounter, including issues of gender inequality and other intersecting forms of marginalization, motivates us to advocate for their rights and help empower them. We firmly believe in the value and potential of every person, and we are dedicated to breaking down systemic barriers and fostering pathways to success.
Our Mission
Marillac Place supports new mothers and mothers-to-be experiencing homelessness in Waterloo Region by providing a safe living environment, teaching parenting & life skills, and developing supportive relationships.
Our Vision
Every mother and child experiencing homelessness in Waterloo Region can recover and rebuild to ensure a successful future.
Our Mandate
Marillac Place provides a safe home for women ages sixteen and up who are pregnant, have a child in their care, or who are attempting to regain care of their child. Residency is permitted for up to 12 months.
Our Guiding Values Safety. Respect. Trust. Inclusion.
Our values serve as the cornerstone of our identity. They shape our interactions with one another and inform our approach to client care. These guiding values are the catalyst for fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment, where our goal is to instill hope and facilitate transformative change in the lives of women we serve.
When vulnerable women and their children come to live at Marillac Place, our work with them is guided by three main principles:
Empower
Empower vulnerable mothers to rewrite their stories.
Encourage
Encourage women to build healthy relationships and engage in educational opportunities.
Hope
Give hope to vulnerable mothers so they may begin to heal and find hope for a brighter future for themselves and their children.
Our History
Marillac Place originated as a Special Works Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Kitchener Particular Council). Our name came from Louise de Marillac, who was a follower of St. Vincent de Paul, and who served the sick and the poor in the sixteenth century.
We first opened our doors in 1987 as a shelter for abused women. In 1992, we changed our mandate to meet the evolving needs of the community by providing housing and support services for pregnant and parenting women and their children. We aim to incorporate our Guiding Values of safety, respect, trust, and inclusion into our culture.
Our People
We believe in the power of community and the strength found in diversity. Our organization is comprised of individuals from all walks of life, each bringing their unique experiences, perspectives, and talents to the table. We foster an inclusive environment where every voice is heard, valued, and respected. From our dedicated team members to our passionate volunteers, we are united by a shared commitment to making a positive impact in the Waterloo Region. Together, we strive to create meaningful connections, drive innovation, and inspire positive change in our community.
